Set four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home, the new installment explores the aftermath of Peter Parker's decision to erase himself from the memories of everyone around him. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the story finds Peter living on his own while dedicating himself completely to protecting New York City.
The official logline describes Peter as "crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name." It further explains: "He’s devoted himself entirely to protecting his city — a full-time Spider-Man — but as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced."
The film reunites Holland with several familiar faces, including Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Jon Bernthal and Michael Mando. New cast additions include Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Liza Colon-Zayas and Marvin Jones II.
CinemaCon attendees were previously shown footage featuring Zendaya’s MJ alongside a new love interest, leading to Parker's realization that she has moved on.
Excitement surrounding the film has already translated into record-breaking numbers. The previously released trailer became the first movie trailer ever to exceed 1 billion views. After debuting on March 17, it reached that milestone in just four days, while also surpassing 718 million views during its first day online.
Speaking at CinemaCon, Sony chairman Tom Rothman celebrated the accomplishment, stating, "It’s as big as anything we’ve ever made, and yet it feels like nothing we’ve ever made. And it has Tom Holland — and I can say this because I’ve seen the movie — in his finest performance."
Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers penned the screenplay for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, while Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige are producing the project.
